Early departure from La Paz City for Sajama National Park. Along the way, we will make several stops. The first will be at the famous Chullpares, ancient funerary towers made of mud, straw, and stone, built by pre-Hispanic cultures as burial and worship sites. In the distance, you can see several funerary towers in the area; these towers are generally square in shape. Inside each tower, there is a vault where chullpas (shriveled human remains) were once placed. These chullpas represent the materialization of the spirituality that existed at the dawn of the Aymara Señorío peoples.
Our second stop will be in Curahuara de Carangas, where we will go on a hike among giant rock formations. This town is also home to the so-called “Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano,” a 17th-century colonial church famous for its murals and frescoes depicting biblical passages and scenes from indigenous daily life. Considered a jewel of Mestizo Baroque art, it has been declared a National Monument.
We will then continue our journey until we reach Sajama National Park, home to Bolivia's highest snow-capped mountain, which stands at an elevation of 21,463 feet (6,542 metres). At this snow-capped mountain, we will make a mountain stop, which requires proper acclimatisation to the altitude. This protected area in the Bolivian high plateau is also known for being the first protected area in Bolivia. We will visit its spectacular geysers, which are hydrothermal vents that periodically release hot water and steam into the air, and the Keñua forest, home to the world's tallest trees at the highest altitude, a wooded area where the trees' shapes seem to reflect their struggle to survive in a very cold and desert-like environment. We will enjoy the hot springs in a unique natural setting to help you relax throughout the journey. Finally, we will return to La Paz at approximately 10:30 PM.
