What you can expect

  • Begin your journey in Shaoxing, a city with over 2,500 years of history. Known as “a museum without walls,” it's the only city in China that can be explored entirely by black-awning boats, winding through canals and under stone bridges. This is the birthplace of Chinese calligraphy, rice wine, and countless legendary figures.

Next, head to East Lake (Donghu) for a boat ride through a living ink painting. Glide through the water on a unique black-canopied boat (Wupeng Boat). Towering above you are sheer, black rock cliffs, carved by nature and ancient quarrying. It's like sailing through a dramatic, black-and-white Chinese painting—an incredibly cinematic experience. Fun fact: scenes from the classic TV series Journey to the West were filmed here.

Duck your head as your boat drifts into mysterious limestone caves within the cliffs. It's a mini-adventure, exploring hidden worlds behind the rock faces. In the summer, drift past the “Ten-Mile Lotus Pond.” In Chinese culture, the lotus represents purity rising from muddy water. It's not just a beautiful sight; it's a glimpse into a deep philosophical ideal and a photographer's dream.

Finally, visit the Orchid Pavilion (Lanting) and join a 1,600-year-old floating cup game. Back in 353 AD, China's most famous calligrapher, Wang Xizhi, threw a gathering. He and his friends sat by a stream, floating wine cups on the water. Wherever a cup stopped, that person had to compose a poem on the spot—or take a sip of wine as a penalty. Wang got so inspired that he wrote the “Preface to the Orchid Pavilion,” a masterpiece that would make him a legend. This “Floating Cup” game became the most famous literary gathering in Chinese history. Today, you can sit by that very stream and see if a cup stops for you.

Stroll through Lanting and stop at Bridge—where Tang Dynasty-style architecture meets silk curtains flowing with calligraphy. As the breeze lifts the fabric over the rippling stream, you'll understand why this is the most picture-perfect spot. Follow the bamboo-lined path to Tianzhang Temple, a thousand-year-old monastery with deep ties to the Preface to the Orchid Pavilion—a peaceful retreat that once inspired poets and artists. End your visit at the “Eighteen Water Jars,” where you can try calligraphy yourself: dip a brush in water, trace characters on stone, and feel the flow of an ancient art.
