Your adventure begins with a convenient hotel pickup in city centre La Paz between 8:00 and 9:15 a.m. The exact pickup time depends on your accommodation and the day's logistics. The order of the visit to the mountain or valley may vary due to weather conditions; typically, the tour begins with the mountain and concludes with the valley.
From La Paz, travel to Chacaltaya Mountain, located approximately 27 km from the city centre and reaching an altitude of 5400 m. Once home to one of the world's highest ski slopes, Chacaltaya is now a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the Andes and the Bolivian Altiplano.
Hike to the summit of Chacaltaya
The vehicle will take you to approximately 5300 m. From there, begin a short hike towards the first summit at around 5,400 m.
The hike is relatively easy when there is little or no snow, but the extreme altitude and lower oxygen levels can make the ascent physically demanding. Take your time and listen to your body. If you begin to feel unwell, you can return to the vehicle at any time.
From the mountain, enjoy impressive views of the Andes Mountains, the Bolivian highlands, Lake Titicaca, the city of La Paz, and the colourful lagoons of the surrounding Altiplano. Along the way, you may also spot local wildlife such as llamas, alpacas, viscachas, and high-altitude birds.
From Chacaltaya to the Valley of the Moon
After visiting Chacaltaya, continue towards the Valley of the Moon, a journey of approximately 1h30m hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Located at approximately 3200 m. the Valley of the Moon is a fascinating landscape shaped by centuries of erosion. Its unusual clay formations, spires, and natural obelisks create an otherworldly scenery that resembles the surface of the moon.
Take a walk through this unique geological landscape and enjoy the contrast between the high-altitude mountains of Chacaltaya and the dramatic formations of the Valley of the Moon. You may also have the chance to see viscachas, small wild animals native to the Andean highlands.
Return to La Paz
After the visit, return to the city centre of La Paz. The tour ends at approximately 3:30 p.m., with a drop-off near San Francisco Church.
