Tell el-Amarna, or Akhetaten, was the capital city founded by Pharaoh Akhenaten during the 18th Dynasty, dedicated to the worship of Aten, the sun disk. The site includes the Royal Tomb of Akhenaten, adorned with unique depictions of the royal family and scenes of Aten worship. The Northern and Southern Tombs, belonging to high officials like Meryra and Ay, showcase well-preserved wall carvings depicting religious ceremonies and daily life. The Great Temple of the Aten, the city's primary religious centre, was an open-air sanctuary reflecting Akhenaten's monotheistic beliefs, while a smaller temple nearby offered a more intimate version of the same design. The ruins of Akhenaten's palace reveal traces of decorative art from royal life.
