Activity itinerary

Walvis Bay Esplanade
  • 30m
We meet at the port of Walvis Bay in the morning. We then explore Walvis Bay and visit the famous wetlands south of Walvis Bay, a Ramsar Site, one of the richest and most important coastal wetlands in Southern Africa. Up to 160,000 birds are counted in our summer months, including thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingos, Damara Terns, Curfew Sandpipers, Chestnut-banded Plovers and numerous other shore- and sea birds.
Namib-Naukluft Park
  • 3h
Afterwards we drive along a spectacular dune belt in the direction of the Namib Desert. En route we visit some of the highest dunes in the area. We continue into the Namib-Naukluft Park and visit the so called "Moonscape", a rugged and rocky scenery reminding us of the surface of the moon. Our next destination is an oasis in the Swakop Canyon called Oasis Goanikontes, meaning "place of many trees". Surprisingly we come across a lush landscape with many trees due to the groundwater in the dry riverbed. This historical place started as a farm in 1848 and used to supply ships with food and water in Walvis Bay. The farm has now been turned into a pleasant resort with a restaurant in the middle of the "Moonscape".
Swakopmund
  • 3h
We then return to the coast and visit the historical tow of Swakopmund. Swakopmund, known as the prime holiday resort of Namibia, was founded in 1892 by the German Colonial Reich. For many years this town was the main harbour for the territory, being served by the mole and later the jetty. Both these structures still exist. Many historical buildings dating from that area are still being used and are rated as historical monuments. The distinct German Colonial character of Swakopmund has been well preserved and is undoubtedly a key attraction for tourists and entrepreneurs. The tour of historical Swakopmund concentrates on the historical part of Swakopmund. Your guide will relate the history of Swakopmund and explain the origin of the various historical buildings in town. However, the tour is not confined to the historical centre, but also includes "millionaire's mile", the northern suburbs and the townships. We return to Walvis Bay port in the afternoon.
