Sitting at the border of the ancient Roman Empire, the city was the western bulwark of the Hungarian Kingdom, and the last marine port on the Danube River during the Middle Ages. It was the town of merchants and craftsmen, boasted a rich viniculture tradition, and was the coronation site for Hungarian kings.
