What you can expect

  • Our Walkbox app guides you through Coimbra’s historic centre bringing each place to life with engaging stories, inspiring photos and a detailed map. Over 70 points of interest add depth and variety, while letting you focus on what interests you, from major landmarks to easy-to-miss details. Narration and route guidance play automatically at the right moments, so you can stay focused on the city around you.

The tour starts by exploring the Baixa before climbing through medieval streets to the Old Cathedral and the University of Coimbra, including the Natural History Museum, Joanina Library, the Courtyard of the Schools and the Royal Palace. Continue through the Botanical Garden and Santa Cruz Park, then descend from Praça da República, passing the Manga Garden on the way to Praça 8 de Maio and Santa Cruz Monastery. The route then returns through the Baixa and Praça do Comércio.

Largo da Portagem, near Santa Clara Bridge, is the suggested starting point, but as the route is circular, you can join it at any point. Please note that there is one steep 450 m uphill section near the beginning of the suggested route, leading up to the University.
