Step into Middle‑earth and discover one of New Zealand’s most magical adventures on this small-group, fully guided day tour to Hobbiton Film Set and Waitomo Glowworm Caves. This unforgettable journey combines two of the North Island’s most iconic attractions with comfort, care, and a touch of Cheeky Kiwi charm.
Your day begins with a pickup from Auckland in our modern, air-conditioned minibus. As we leave the city, your guide will share stories about Auckland’s highlights and set the scene for the day ahead. Travelling south, soak up the stunning scenery of the Waikato region, New Zealand’s most extensive farming area.
Arriving at Hobbiton Film Set, you’ll board a big green Hobbiton bus and embark on a 2.5-hour guided tour of this incredible 12-acre film set. Wander through lush pastures dotted with Hobbit holes, see the Mill, the Party Tree, and learn behind-the-scenes secrets from the making of the films. Finish your visit with a complimentary drink at the iconic Green Dragon Inn, soaking up the Shire’s magic.
Next, we pause at beautiful Lake Karapiro for a photo stop. Framed by rolling countryside, this picturesque lake is home to one of New Zealand’s first hydro dams and a world-class rowing venue. Continuing on, we pass through Otorohanga, the “Kiwiana capital of New Zealand,” where quirky roadside displays celebrate all things Kiwi.
Recharge with a delicious included lunch featuring savoury bites, sweet treats, and a drink, perfect for refuelling before the afternoon’s adventure.
Before arriving at Waitomo, we stop outside the Big Bird & Miniature Animal Petting Farm. Though there’s no time to enter, friendly animals often wander to the fence for a photo opportunity, delighting guests with surprise encounters.
At Waitomo Glowworm Caves, prepare to be amazed as you explore a network of underground limestone caverns with a professional guide. See dramatic stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years before boarding a boat for a serene journey along the subterranean river. Look up to witness thousands of tiny glowworms lighting up the darkness like a starry night sky — a breathtaking and uniquely New Zealand experience. (Please note: photography is not permitted inside the caves to protect this delicate ecosystem.)*
As your day winds down, sit back and relax on the fully guided return journey to Auckland. Along the way, enjoy more commentary, and beautiful scenery, making this day not just about the destinations but the entire journey.
Maintenance & restoration construction at Hobbiton is set to begin 01 June 2025, with the major works being completed in September 2025. During this period, construction and maintenance equipment and noise will be present. Tours will continue as normal but will take an alternative route around the construction zone, while being able to get a glimpse of the work that goes into keeping Hobbiton Film Set as magical as it looked in the films.
