What you can expect
Iriomote Island: World Heritage Mangrove Canoeing & Nature Trekking
Paddle through the winding mangrove waterways of Iriomote Island, known as Japan's last uncharted territory. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, nearly 90% of the island is covered by primary subtropical forest and Japan's largest mangrove system, a landscape practically undisturbed by humans.
Glide by canoe through calm, brackish water, hearing only the dip of your paddle and distant bird calls. Surrounded by greenery and arched roots, you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. Canoeing is a quiet, eco-friendly way to get close to wildlife without disturbing its habitat.
The tour follows the tides. At low tide, step onto land for an easy trek through the mangrove forest, perfect for beginners. On the exposed tidal flats, see the trees' “walking roots” and spot tiny crabs and mudskippers, while your guide explains how these “forests of the sea” protect the island's biodiversity.
Family-friendly and suitable for all ages, with guidance and safety equipment provided, no experience needed.
Your guide will take photos with a waterproof camera throughout the tour, and all photo data is provided free of charge.
