Discover one of Crete’s most spectacular hiking routes on a fully organised day trip from Chania to the Samaria Gorge.
Your day begins with pickup from a selected meeting point near your accommodation. Travel by comfortable, air-conditioned coach towards the Omalos Plateau, located high in the White Mountains.
Before entering the gorge, enjoy free time for an optional breakfast and receive practical information from your local mountain guide about the trail, safety, timing, available water points, and the meeting arrangements in Agia Roumeli.
Begin the approximately 16 km descent from Xyloskalo and walk through a constantly changing landscape of pine and cypress forests, rocky riverbeds, freshwater springs, and dramatic mountain cliffs.
Along the route, discover the natural beauty of Samaria National Park and look out for native plants and the Cretan wild goat, known locally as the Kri-Kri.
One of the most impressive sections of the hike is the famous Iron Gates, where the towering walls of the gorge narrow dramatically around the trail.
The hike normally takes approximately 4 to 6 hours, depending on your pace and physical condition. You are free to walk at your own comfortable speed, while your mountain guide remains available along the route to provide guidance, support, and assistance.
Please note that this is a demanding hike over uneven, rocky, and occasionally steep terrain. It is recommended for travellers with moderate to good physical fitness and appropriate hiking footwear.
After completing the trail, arrive at the remote seaside village of Agia Roumeli. Enjoy free time to swim in the Libyan Sea, relax on the beach, or have lunch at one of the local tavernas.
In the afternoon, board the ferry from Agia Roumeli to Sougia. Upon arrival, meet your coach for the return journey to Chania and your original pickup area.
