What you can expect

  • Meet your guide and begin your stroll through the garden. Learn about the meaning behind its design, including the placement of stones, the flow of water, and the use of space.

Admire the garden’s masterful use of “shakkei,” or borrowed scenery. From the garden’s rear section, see Todai-ji’s Great South Gate and Mount Mikasa (Wakakusa-yama) beautifully incorporated into the landscape.

These distant elements blend seamlessly into the garden’s composition, creating a view that feels at once intimate and expansive—a hallmark of Japanese aesthetics.

To complete your experience, enjoy a matcha tea ceremony served in the very building with the most stunning view of the garden and its borrowed scenery. Sipping green tea while gazing out at this timeless composition allows you to fully appreciate the garden with all five senses.
