    Torii are gates built at the entrances to shrines, marking the boundary between the sacred space of the shrine (the sacred area) and the human world (the secular area). It is also said to serve as a symbol of the shrine and as a boundary to prevent evil spirits from entering the sacred space.

    The 1,000 torii gates at Fushimi Inari are accumulated votive offerings from worshippers expressing hope or gratitude for wishes coming true.
    Although the name “1,000 torii” is given to the gates, it is said that there are actually nearly 10,000 of them.
