Plague, cholera, syphilis and other epidemics that plagued Reggio Emilia in a dark past.
An unusual itinerary through the less-traveled streets of Reggio Emilia, exploring the epidemics and diseases that have marked the city over the centuries. We will talk about the places associated with plague doctors, undertakers, and gravediggers, where the transport of the dying to the lazarettos and of the dead to the mass graves was organised.
The route will also lead us to the former locations of Reggio Emilia's “houses of tolerance,” charity hospitals, religious symbols, small altars, superstitions, and folk remedies used to ward off plagues and cholera.
An original, intense and intriguing tour that brings to light traces still present of a darker, more fragile and forgotten Reggio, but one that is deeply connected to its history.
