What you can expect
At 9am, the sun shines brightly, but has no warmth. Many of the residents are dressed to keep warm, and nearly every person wears gumboots, everywhere and every time. Even the little children have little gumboots, in some micro-fashion style. But the Aberdares area oozes an especially crisp freshness that an urban dweller, seeking to escape from the hubbub of city life, would find appealing. The mountain range is the perfect place for a fun seeker, an adventurer and a health and fitness buff. For the outdoorsy person like me, Aberdares presents the alluring challenge, the quest to scale it to the top. WANJOHI FALLS Welcome for adventurous excursion to the Aberdares Range all the way to the Wanjohi Falls- in the heart of Happy Valley - this is one of the best (and not the biggest) in Aberdare ranges. Waters from the famous Wanjohi River have a unique waterfall that will allow you stand behind the falling waters, giving you an opportunity to take amazing photos with the rainbow! After all, it marvelled even the white settlers.. “It was a time when the Wanjohi River, which meandered its way through Kenya's White Highlands, was said to flow with champagne.”By Adrian Blomfield 8:49PM BST 08 Jul 2008 for The Telegraph newspaper The Works A welcome drink a waits you at the camp as you prepare for the hike to the falls. The hike starts at 10:00hrs. Carry some snacks and drinking water with you. This is a family friendly hike features gentle hikes and slopes with a few areas which demands for team work to pull through to the next level, soft rock climbing and meandering route to the waterfall makes it all fun. The calling waterfalls, punctuated by chants of black and white Columbus monkeys make the going fun. Further afield, Lake Ol bollosat and Lake Naivasha shimmers in the horizon. This hidden rural attraction brings harmony and sense of togetherness as we hike, trek and enjoy nature. It takes about 3-4 hours to the waterfall and 1.5 to 2hrs downhill. The sweet clean water filtered by dense vegetation upstream is worth filling your bottles with as you go down. The Hiking / Nature Walks / Trekking takes about 4 - 5 hours up and down to the falls, making it ideal family workout day and awesome for beginners. Return to Maverick Campsite, Rondavels & Homestay hot lunch and a changing room awaits you. The excursion ends around 16:00hrs.
