Overview

  • Rangitoto Island is Auckland's most iconic volcanic landmark, New Zealand's youngest and largest shield volcano, formed by eruptions around 600 years ago. It's also a pest-free wildlife sanctuary managed by the Department of Conservation, so a walk here means untouched lava fields, native forest and hidden lava caves you won't find anywhere else in the region, all just 25 minutes from city centre Auckland. Climb to the summit for panoramic views across the Hauraki Gulf and the Auckland skyline, a landscape formed by nature, not built by hand.

Know before you book

    • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
    • This Voucher is Valid for Travel
    • Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes, the volcanic lava rock terrain is uneven in places and unsuitable for sandals or jandals. Dress for the weather and bring sun protection, much of the summit track is exposed with little shade.
    • No shops are located on the island. Please bring your own food and drinks.
    • The summit walk includes some boardwalk stairs and uneven volcanic terrain. It's entirely optional, if you'd prefer not to make the climb, you're welcome to stay at the base and enjoy the views and surroundings from there.
    • There are no shops or cafes on the island, so bring plenty of water, snacks and sun cream to last the day.
    • This is a moderate-fitness activity. The return summit walk covers 2.3km each way with an elevation gain of around 260 metres over uneven volcanic lava rock, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. Allow a full day for your Rangitoto visit, including ferry travel.
    • Rangitoto is a pest-free wildlife sanctuary, so no animals are permitted on the island, and all visitors and their bags will undergo a biosecurity check before boarding the ferry.

Activity itinerary

Rangitoto Island (Pass by)

Step off the ferry and into a landscape unlike anywhere else in Auckland, New Zealand's youngest and largest shield volcano, formed by eruptions just 600 years ago. Lace up your walking shoes and take on the Rangitoto Summit Track, a 2.3km trail winding through stark volcanic lava fields and pockets of native forest. Along the way, detour into the fascinating lava caves, tucked around 200 metres below the summit, before continuing your climb to the top. From the summit, you're rewarded with sweeping panoramic views across the Hauraki Gulf, its scattered islands and the Auckland skyline. Allow 2 to 3 hours for the return walk, and keep an eye out for native wildlife thriving in this pest-free sanctuary. Pack water, snacks and sun protection, there are no cafes or shops on the island, so it's just you, the lava rock underfoot and one of the best views in the Gulf.
