Discover the Mediterranean side of Switzerland in a full-day journey by train. Cross the Alps on the historic Gotthard line, climbing through ingenious spiral tunnels into the south. In Bellinzona, explore the old town with its lively squares and Italian flair, and wander the UNESCO-listed fortress that overlooks the valley. A stop in Arcegno reveals narrow lanes, stone houses, and chestnut groves, with the chance to enjoy a meal in a rustic grotto — a true Ticino tradition. From here, an optional hike over the Balladrüm ridge rewards with sweeping views of Lago Maggiore and snow-capped mountains. In Ascona, stroll the lakeside promenade lined with palms, arcaded houses, and elegant villas, the “pearl of southern Switzerland.”
The return journey takes you through the Gotthard Base Tunnel — 57 km long and beneath the Alps with over two kilometres of rock overhead — carrying you back north in record time. A day of rail history, southern flair, and unforgettable landscapes.
