What you can expect
Discover Japanese calligraphy in a private 60-minute workshop in Roppongi, guided by a calligrapher with a PhD in Japanese calligraphy.
Unlike a standard introductory calligraphy class, this experience explores both brush technique and the history behind the characters you write. Learn how ancient scripts developed in China and later became part of Japan’s calligraphy tradition, while discovering how different forms express balance, rhythm, and beauty.
Begin with a live demonstration of traditional brush techniques and an introduction to classical scripts such as Tensho (seal script) and Reisho (clerical script).
You’ll then choose a kanji that is meaningful to you—such as 夢 (Dream) or 和 (Harmony)—and practice writing it with personal guidance from your instructor. Your brushwork will be corrected using traditional red-ink feedback, allowing you to see exactly how each stroke can be improved.
Once you’re ready, create your final calligraphy artwork on a shikishi board or fan to take home as a personal souvenir from Japan.
An English-speaking interpreter or assistant will support the session, helping you understand the artistic, historical, and cultural explanations throughout the workshop.
No previous calligraphy experience is needed. Because this is a private experience, the instructor can adjust the guidance to your level and interests.
