As a modern, scientifically managed zoo, Wuppertal Zoo places particular emphasis on keeping its animals in species-appropriate conditions. Therefore, the enclosures are exceptionally spacious and designed to closely resemble the animals' natural environments. In summer, the zoo delights visitors with its park-like atmosphere and its lush, mature trees, which provide plenty of shade on hot days.
Experience hyacinth macaws and sun parakeets flying overhead in Aralandia, a unique free-flying aviary; discover the African lions roaming Europe's largest lion enclosure; or observe the herd of African elephants, the most successful breeding programme in Europe. You can watch the king and gentoo penguins “flying” through an acrylic glass tunnel, and the California sea lions frolic in their pool, where you can observe their diving skills through the large windows.
In the JuniorZoo, the zoo's youngest visitors can lend a hand with feeding or pet and play with the resident pygmy goats. At the numerous playgrounds, some of which have been redesigned, children of all ages can let off steam and have fun. Children up to 14 years of age may enter the zoo free of charge.
