What you can expect

The Gothic Quarter features a labyrinthine street plan with winding roads and hidden squares. Medieval buildings and remains of the Roman settlement stand beside chic restaurants and trendy bars. Discover a place full of history and architecture where locals spend their nights out.

A starting point for most visitors, the Gothic Quarter captures the essence of old Barcelona. Step back in time as you walk through the 14th-century public square, Plaça del Rei, a prime example of the city’s splendour during the Middle Ages. The imposing royal palace, Palau Reial Major, once home to the Catalan courts, rises at the back of the square.

Follow your local guide and hear about the city’s history and its Roman roots. Visit the royal chapel of Santa Agata, built on top of the Roman wall, and admire its altarpiece by Jaume Huguet. Your next stop is the Temple of Augustus, a well-preserved relic of the Imperial period. The Corinthian style columns, which date back to the first century BC, are incorporated into the medieval building.

Stroll down cobbled streets closed to regular traffic, pass outdoor cafés, and take a peek inside bustling bars popular among young people.
