Step into the world of ancient craftsmanship with a hands-on workshop located in the scenic area of Peradeniya. This three-hour immersive session invites you to learn the delicate art of Kandyan silver smithing, a tradition passed down through generations of Sri Lankan artisans. Under the guidance of a master craftsman, transform raw materials into a unique piece of jewellery using authentic, time-honored techniques.
Begin with an introduction to traditional Kandyan motifs. Sketch your design and learn how to calculate the silver weight required for your piece. Experience the heat of the workshop as you assist in melting the silver. Pour the molten metal into a mould and then use a series of hammers and anvils to shape it into a workable wire or plate.
Next, practice traditional filing, bending, and soldering techniques to join the components of your jewellery. The final stage involves smoothing the edges and polishing the silver until it reaches a brilliant shine, characteristic of high-quality Sri Lankan craft.
Enjoy personalised, step-by-step guidance from an experienced local jeweller. Use traditional hand tools, including blowpipes, hammers, and engraving instruments. Stay refreshed with complimentary bottled water and authentic Ceylon tea to enjoy during your session.
If you fall in love with the piece you’ve created, you have the option to keep it. The cost of the silver and final piece is not included in the initial experience fee. This must be negotiated and agreed upon with the craftsman before you begin the making process to ensure transparency regarding the market price of the metal.
