What you can expect
Embark on a guided walking tour through the heart of Mantua, a gem of Lombardy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a city long ruled by the House of Gonzaga. This tour is the perfect opportunity to learn about the city’s history and admire its major monuments, as you pass through elegant squares and colourful facades.
The tour begins at the artificial lakes that formed part of the city's defensive system. You will then see the Castle of Saint George, which is easily recognisable by its four towers and its moat. Continuing towards the vast Ducal Palace complex, you will discover the courtyards and interior squares of this monumental ensemble, built over the centuries and serving as the true political and artistic heart of the Dukes of Mantua.
The route then takes you to Piazza Sordello, where you will find the Cathedral, the Episcopal Palace, and Rigoletto’s House, in a area steeped in history. You will then continue to the city center’s iconic squares, including Piazza Broletto and the Arengario, before reaching Piazza delle Erbe, one of Mantua’s most vibrant squares, surrounded by civic buildings and beautiful urban architecture.
The highlight of the tour is entering the Basilica of Saint Andrew, the majestic Gonzaga family church, a Renaissance masterpiece designed by Leon Battista Alberti and the sanctuary of the relic of the “Precious Blood.” The tour concludes near the Lungorio Canal and Giulio Romano's former fish markets (Pescherie), a perfect spot to take photos and discover some of the typical products sold by local producers.
This tour is suitable for everyone and will still run in case of bad weather, thanks to the arcades that often provide shelter along part of the route.
