What you can expect

Day 1: Fly Addis to Semera Cultural Immersion
Upon arrival at Semera Airport, be picked up and go for breakfast and a coffee break. Drive to a nearby Afar nomadic village and be welcomed by local community elders. Get a brief orientation on Afar lifestyle, traditions, and history.
Explore the Assayta open market (if market day — usually Thursday). See spices, salt blocks, Afar daggers, jewellery, and camel saddles. Interact with Issa and Afar tribespeople. Watch a traditional cooking demo and participate in preparing Afar camel meat stew kofo and spicy bread cooked on top of a hot stone. Enjoy lunch with what you cooked.
Participate in an Afar tea or Chat ceremony at a village elder's house. Learn about the Afar mobile huts (Aris) construction and how they’re built and moved from place to place. Observe family roles: men as herders, women as home keepers. Try on Afar clothing (white robe, shash/head wrap). Get hands-on experience weaving mats, preparing butter, or braiding traditional Afar hairstyles. Attend a storytelling session with village elders about clan battles, peace pacts, and migration myths.
In the evening, take a sunset walk along the Awash River floodplain. Enjoy a community dinner with camel milk and roasted meat. Watch a music and dance performance (women’s ululation and rhythmic shoulder dances). End the day with a campfire Q&A session about nomadic life and marriage customs. Spend the night at a community camp.

Day 2: Lake Afambo Nature & Nomadic Livelihood Pastoral Life + Nature & Departure

Early in the morning, go on a camel ride with nomads to grazing fields. Travel to Lake Afambo (~1.5–2 hr drive), an oasis region known for its palm-fringed lakes and traditional Afar communities.
Stop at viewpoints to learn about volcanic formations and climate adaptation. Take a scenic drive through palm-lined oases and dry lava fields. Visit Afambo village on Lake Afambo. Go on a dugout canoe ride or walk along the lake edge. Learn about fishing practices and salt farming. Go birdwatching for flamingos, storks, and herons (bring binoculars if possible). Watch a demonstration of date harvesting and water storage techniques.
Walk with a camel caravan en route to the salt pans (seasonal). Help load/unload camels and learn caravan etiquette. Enjoy a final community meal with families. Have a picnic-style lunch under an acacia tree with local hosts. Learn about seasonal migration routes and livestock survival in the desert.
Have a sit-down discussion with a local women’s group (topics: marriage, nomadic education, resilience). Attend a farewell ceremony with blessings. Enjoy optional henna painting and souvenir buying (handmade crafts, beads). Exchange gifts or souvenirs (optional).
Return to Semera in the late afternoon. Check in to a hotel and stroll around town. Spend the night at a hotel to refresh and have dinner.
