What you can expect

  • Ålesund is more than a beautiful city by the sea. If you look more closely, you will discover traces everywhere of how the city and Norway have changed over time.

In a small group, we explore Ålesund from the historic harbour to the famous Art Nouveau facades. It's not just about what we see, but also about why the city looks the way it does today and what stories lie behind it.

The walking tour starts at the Fisherboy Monument right on the waterfront. We follow Ålesund's development into a major centre of the salted and dried cod trade and learn how fishing and trade brought prosperity to the city. Along the way, we also talk about major infrastructure projects, Norway's oil and gas wealth, and how this wealth has changed the country and its society.

After a short break for coffee or ice cream, we continue with the Art Nouveau for which Ålesund is known today. The city fire of 1904 destroyed almost the entire city centre. At Kongens gate, you will learn why Art Nouveau in Ålesund often seems much more restrained and minimalist compared to other European Art Nouveau cities.

There is much to discover on these facades: Why are there flowers, animals, and faces? What do these symbols mean? Together, we will discover many small details that are easily overlooked when passing by and learn about the stories and ideas behind them.

But Ålesund is more than its architecture. We also talk about fishermen and merchants, war and reconstruction, economic change, and how Norway has changed up to the present day.

The small group size leaves plenty of time for questions, discussions and personal recommendations. At the end, you will receive a digital brochure with further tips about restaurants, cafes, shops, and things to do in Ålesund.

The meeting point and ending point are just a few minutes' walk from the southern cruise port. The tour times are coordinated with the cruise ships' docking times. If you have any questions before or after the tour, you can send us a message at any time.
