This 600-year-old temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, an incarnation of Goddess Durga. Upon arrival, marvel at the intricately carved silver gates, which were donated by Maharaja Ganga Singh. The temple is famous for being home to thousands of rats, revered as sacred and known as “Kabbas.” These rats move freely around the temple, and devotees believe that feeding them brings blessings and good fortune.
As you explore, you will learn about the fascinating legend associated with Karni Mata. According to mythology, when her son Laxman drowned in a pond, Karni Mata pleaded with Yama, the god of death, to bring him back to life. Initially refusing, Yama later relented, allowing Laxman and all of Karni Mata’s male children to be reincarnated as rats. This belief has led to generations of worshippers offering prayers at the temple.
