What you can expect

The walk begins at the statue of the Fisher Boy in the heart of the city – a symbol of Ålesund's close connection to the sea and the fishing industry. Along the waterfront, you will learn how the city has evolved from the centre of the Norwegian salted and dried cod trade to a vibrant coastal city on the Atlantic.

You will also get an insight into Norway's impressive infrastructure: tunnels under the sea, floating bridges, and great engineering visions that shape life on the coast today.

A special focus of the walking tour is on the unique Art Nouveau cityscape of Ålesund. After the city fire of 1904, the entire city centre area was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style within a few years – today, it is one of the most cohesive and impressive examples of this architecture in Europe. Art Nouveau is particularly visible on the Royal Road – here we place the architecture of Ålesund in its historical context.

Finally, we go to the Grimmerhaugen – a vantage point overlooking the harbour, the city, and the surrounding islands (not the Aksla with its 418 steps). This last section requires a sure footing as the path is sometimes uneven. There will be time here for questions, discussions, and personalised recommendations for restaurants, cafés, and places that locals also appreciate.

After the tour, you will also receive a digital brochure with valuable information and tips for the rest of your stay in Alesund.

The group size is deliberately kept small to ensure a calm and personal atmosphere. Private tours for up to 4 people can be flexibly arranged.

Note for cruise guests: The starting point and ending point are just a few minutes' walk from the cruise port. The tour is coordinated with the ships' docking times and is a perfect shore excursion – a quick look at your onboard schedule is all you need.
