Overview

This tour is designed to show samurai history as a living storey, not just a list of old buildings. In Matsushiro, the castle ruins, the Sanada Residence, and the Former Bunbu School stand close together, allowing you to follow the world of the samurai in a clear and meaningful order.

You will begin at the former political centre of the castle town, then step inside a preserved residence connected to the Sanada family, and finally visit the school where young samurai learned both academic and martial skills. With your guide’s explanations, you will discover how samurai governed, lived with their families, received guests, studied, trained, and prepared to serve their domain.

This experience is ideal for travellers who want a deeper understanding of Japan’s samurai culture beyond famous battles and armour. It offers a rare look at the everyday life, education, and values of samurai in a real historic town.

Matsushiro Castle Ruins

  • 25m
  • Admission ticket included
Matsushiro Castle Ruins mark the former centre of the Matsushiro domain, once ruled by the Sanada family during the Edo period. Originally associated with the strategic struggles of the Sengoku period, the castle later became the political heart of a castle town worth 100,000 koku. Today, visitors can see the restored Taiko Gate and the remains of the main enclosure, where the domain’s administrative and residential buildings once stood.

Sanada House

  • 50m
  • Admission ticket included
The Sanada Residence is a well-preserved late Edo-period residence built for the family of the Matsushiro domain lord. After the Meiji Restoration, it continued to be used by the former ruling family. Inside, visitors can see how formal reception areas and more private living spaces were arranged, offering a rare glimpse into the lifestyle, architecture, and garden culture of a high-ranking samurai family.

Matsushiro Bunbu School

  • 45m
  • Admission ticket included
The Former Bunbu School was the domain school of Matsushiro, where the children of samurai studied both academic and martial subjects. Its curriculum included swordsmanship, archery, spearmanship, Chinese classics, medicine, etiquette, and even Western military studies. The site shows how samurai were trained not only as warriors, but also as educated officials who supported the domain.
