Begin your journey with a climb from Porto Novo along the old cobblestone road that cuts through the island's central mountain range. As you gain altitude, watch the arid southern landscape transform into lush pine and eucalyptus forests, offering spectacular views of volcanic peaks and the ocean.

Make your first stop at the majestic Cratera da Cova, a perfectly preserved volcanic caldera over 1,000 metres high. Explore the fertile flat bottom, used for community farming for generations, and admire the mystical sea of clouds often created by the high-altitude microclimate.

Begin your descent towards the north coast, entering the lush Paúl Valley, famous for its terraced agricultural slopes irrigated by ancient levadas. Observe sugarcane, banana, and papaya plantations, and stop at a traditional distillery to learn about the artisanal production of Grogue and taste tropical fruit liqueurs.

Arrive at sea level and pause in the historic town of Ribeira Grande, the urban and administrative centre of the north. Stroll among colonial buildings and urban art murals, followed by a typical Cape Verdean lunch of fresh coastal fish or a rich traditional cachupa.

In the afternoon, continue to Ponta do Sol, the northernmost point of the island, where the picturesque fishing pier with its colourful boats facing the Atlantic waves and the serene life of the colonial squares stand out. Leave Ponta do Sol to the east, following the dramatic Janela coastal road, flanked by black vertical cliffs, and cross the iconic Janela Tunnels—galleries manually carved into the volcanic rock that reveal, upon exit, a superb view of the imposing Ilhéu de Janela.

To crown the day, stop near Ponta de Tumba for a short, flat, and accessible 3.5 km (return) walk along the coastal cliff to the historic Boi Lighthouse (Fontes Pereira de Melo Lighthouse), a 19th-century structure situated on an isolated promontory with stunning panoramic views of the open sea in the late afternoon.
