What you can expect

  • Your journey begins with an early morning drive from Kathmandu towards the river put-in point at Dolalghat. As the city fades behind you, terraced hills, roadside villages, and Himalayan foothills set the tone for the adventure ahead. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your river guides, receive a full safety briefing, and get fitted with helmets, life jackets, and paddles before launching onto the legendary Sun Koshi River — the “River of Gold.”

The first days ease you into the rhythm of expedition life. Gentle Class III rapids build teamwork and confidence while you float past lush forests, suspension bridges, and remote riverside settlements where locals wave from the banks. Nights are spent camping on pristine sandy beaches under open skies. Evenings bring freshly prepared meals, campfires, and the soothing sound of the river flowing beside your tent.

As the river gathers strength, the rapids grow bigger and more technical. You’ll charge through famous whitewater sections with towering standing waves, swirling currents, and powerful drops that demand synchronised paddling. Between adrenaline-filled stretches, calm pools allow time to swim, relax, and absorb the dramatic scenery of deep gorges and cascading waterfalls.

Mid-expedition, the trip transitions towards Mulghat, where you prepare for an exhilarating side journey on the wild Tamur River. Here, over 30 continuous Class IV+ rapids deliver fast, technical, heart-pounding action. The water is steeper, narrower, and more intense — a true test of skill and teamwork. After conquering the Tamur’s surging waves, you rejoin the main river system at the confluence that forms the mighty Sapta Koshi.

The final stretch widens into expansive plains as you drift towards Chatara. The landscape transforms from mountain valleys to subtropical lowlands, offering a peaceful conclusion to days of adventure. After taking out at Chatara, you drive back to Kathmandu — tired, exhilarated, and bonded with your team through one of the world’s great multi-day river expeditions.

This experience combines thrilling whitewater, untouched wilderness, cultural encounters, riverside camping, and the unmatched satisfaction of completing a full Himalayan river journey from mountains to plains.
