Iriomote Island: Night Jungle Adventure & Natural Planetarium Stargazing
Join a knowledgeable local guide on a night walk through one of Japan's most mysterious landscapes. Known as the “Galapagos of the East,” Iriomote transforms after dark, as its subtropical mangroves and forests come alive with nocturnal wildlife.
Head into the heart of the jungle, where every rustle in the leaves tells a storey. Search for coconut crabs, the largest land-living arthropods in the world. Finding these masters of camouflage takes a bit of luck, but the search is half the fun. You may also meet giant hermit crabs, rare Ryukyu scops owls, and unique tropical insects.
Then move to a spot with an unobstructed view of the sky. With virtually no light pollution, Iriomote offers a “natural planetarium” where the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon. Your guide will share local folklore and point out seasonal constellations.
Staying overnight on Iriomote? This is the perfect way to enjoy the night. Your guide will capture the best moments of your jungle trek and the starlit sky, and all photo data is provided free of charge.
