Ohr-O’Keefe Museum occupies a campus of green lawns and grand oak trees. The deconstructivist-style gallery halls are the work of acclaimed architect Frank O. Gehry.
Ceramic art of the Gulf of Mexico is the museum’s main focus. Find nearly 200 pieces created by Biloxi local George Ohr in addition to works by artists such as Joseph Fortune Meyer and Toshiko Takaezu.
Learn about the fascinating life of Ohr via the George Edgar Ohr: I am the Potter Who Wasexhibit inside the Gallery of African American Art. It features documents, photographs and videos about the man regarded as a pioneer of the American modernist movement.
In the Mississippi Sound Welcome Center, The World Through My Eyesexhibit is a collaboration between artists and local school children. Ever-changing displays showcase the nurturing of personal identities and art appreciation. From the center’s lookout, enjoy views of the campus, Mississippi Sound and Deer Island, where George Ohr studied with Joseph Fortune Meyer.
Don’t miss the Pleasant Reed Interpretive Center, set inside a replica of a narrow shotgun house built by a former slave in the late 1800s. Its City Within a City: African American Culture in Biloxiexhibit highlights life in the one-time segregated neighborhood of Biloxi. Purchase books, home decor, jewelry and pottery at the museum shop.
Find the museum in East Biloxi, a 5-minute drive from both downtown Biloxi and Point Cadet. Visitors arriving by car can use the free parking lots at the front and rear of the campus. If you don’t have a car, get here by walking along the beachfront for just over 15 minutes from Town Green.
