Enjoy sweeping views across Innsbruck’s Old Town and back towards the mountains from this eye-catching commemorative monument.

St. Anne’s Column (Annasäule) is a symbol of Tyrolese pride. The column stands in the middle of the busy Mary Theresian Street and is framed by mountains and colourful buildings. Annasäule graces many postcards and souvenirs as the symbol of Innsbruck.

Stand at the base of the column to admire the lifelike expressions on the faces of the saints that surround it. See the detail of the cherubs carved into the sides of the base, and the natural patterns in the red marble of the column itself.

St. Anna’s Column was constructed in 1706, three years after the Tyrolese forces had driven Bavarian troops out of the area. It was designed by the Italian architect Christophoro Benedetti in the Corinthian style, and was officially blessed on St. Anne’s Day, July 26.

At the base of the column are four statues of saints, each looking towards a different point of the compass. There is St. Anne St. George, one of the protectors of Tyrol St. Cassion and St. Vigius. Standing atop the 42-foot (13-metre) column is a statue of the Virgin Mary.

The peak of the Hafelekar mountain, which remains snow-covered long into the spring, makes for a stunning backdrop to the column. The column is surrounded by old buildings including The Rathaus, or Town Hall, which sits on one side. The Triumphpforte (Triumphal Arch), is further down Mary Theresian Street.

The grassy lawn at the foot of the column is a favourite picnic spot for locals and visitors. Enjoy views of the column and wide boulevard while life on the street buzzes around you.

St. Anne’s column sits just south of the town centre, within easy walking distance of many of the other main attractions. The column is always open and free to visit. The easiest way to get there is on foot, as traffic in the street can be busy and there is no on-street parking. Alternatively, take the bus.
