Overrated hotel

This hotel is over rated. Well beyond its best before date. Needs to be updated and maintained. Lights out in bathroom, door to shower cabinet broken. Towel from previous guest stilm in bathroom. Simple breakfast and slow service of hot plate. Everything is old but it is not dirty. Tomas

Non existent stay

I cannot do this as despite booking and paying for three rooms for a family wedding nearby in March 2025, I was given 48 hours notice that the hotel could not accommodate two of the rooms. The staff were not at all helpful when I phoned them. Didn’t seem to care that this was causing a lot of anxiety and stress. I was told my booking was on ‘the old’ system as the hotel has changed hands. When the one party member checked in I found the staff not very welcoming at all. No smiling welcome. Very laid back about the whole thing.

Une déception

Nous avons passé une nuit en famille dans cet hotel. Nous l'avions choisi du fait de sa localisation et de la note client qu'il avait. Les avis donnés nous avaient également donné confiance. Quelle déception en decouvrant la chambre. Elle n'avait pas été nettoyée : nombreux cheveux et poils sur la moquette de la chambre, ainsi que sur le sol de la salle de bain, dans le lavabo, et même dans la douche. La literie etait heureusement propre et confortable. La nourriture etait quant à elle plutôt convenable.

Staff were very friendly, courteous and responsive. The beds were comfortable and the rooms clean. We enjoyed our stay and would come back.

The hotel has gone downhill since changing hands. The breakfast food was cold and the eggs were overcooked. I had salmon for breakfast purporting to be fresh from Portsoy but it certainly didn’t look like it. It meant that we were no way going to eat in the hotel for our evening meal. The cleaning standards were very poor. The carpet on stairs looked like they’d never been hoovered for a good while and window ledges were dirty. The bed was actually comfortable and clean however. I was so very disappointed with the hotel

Not as expected

Very tired and run down. Had called beforehand and explained I had walking difficulties and was promised a lower level room - they tried to put me on the second floor but could not do the stairs so they found a room on the 1st floor. Needs a makeover. It’s is so run down it looks dirty but it is not. Apart from lipstick on my glass it was actually very clean. Thought I had boooked for breakfast through hotels.com but hadn’t so didn’t eat at the hotel.

Slept well and pretty good breakfast at a good price. But.... In dire need of modernisation. Although clean enough, attention to detail is absent and strange choices have been made. Rooms need a daily check and if things aren't right, they need to be fixed. A shower door that doesn't close properly, cables crossing behind the TV causing interference, sitting the breakfast area miles away from the rooms and being surprised when guests sit in the dinner area which they come to first instead. And the signs. Handwritten tatty signs are everywhere. The staff are either inexperienced or don't care. Having said all that, the locals seem to use the place and were welcoming in the bar where a couple of staff also spent the evening. We found out that the hotel has recently been taken over by a hotel group so I suspect changes will be made once they gear up and it may well be a different place soon. But I can only review what we experienced and wish everyone well for future success as it's a hard business to make work and changing / modernising the offer here will take time, energy and a lot of money. But the bones of decent accommodation may well be enough to build on. Good luck to all concerned.

Dreary hotel

On arrival we had to go looking for someone to check us in. The room and bathroom were clean but that was the only plus. The beds were very hard mattresses, they were very uncomfortable. The wall light fittings were falling off. The room was above the bar so it was very noisy till closing time. Breakfast was poor. The young girl serving was very pleasant but the food not so good. We both ordered poached eggs on white toast. Eggs were ok but the toast was disgusting. Cheap bread ( value coop as i seen packet ) which barely seen the heat of the grill! It was basically warmed bread, yuk. No one again at reception to take our keys. Overall i was very disappointed with the hotel, i wont be going back.

Impressed.

Check in was very good. Woman at the bar was very helpful and checked me in. She took me upto my room and made me aware of where breakfast was in the morning. Very impressed. I was out on the lash all day and night. Came back at night for a few drinks and a game of pool. Went upstairs and the bed was big which is good but not too comfortable. It didnt put me off but it might have if i was sober haha. When i checked in I was asked when I'd like breakfast. I went down in the morning and my room number was on the table. I sat down and a while later i was asked what I'd like for breakfast. I ordered and after a while it came with an extra plate of scrambled and poached eggs. The waitress forgot to ask how I liked my eggs so she gave me them all ways which was appreciated. All in all I enjoyed my stay and I recommend it.
