Check in was disorganised, unhelpful and a terrible overall experience. It was only when the duty manager stepped in that we received some form of assistance. Very disappointing for what was once a great hotel.

Double sided tape stuck to the door
We were given a room that seemed like an assisted room (not required or wanted) that didn’t have a shower curtain/glass.
Simple housekeeping was non existent.

Das Personal war sehr freundlich, die Anlage insgesamt schön und sicher, das Frühstück sehr reichhaltig. Aber: Der Pool war total trüb! Wir hatten kein warmes Wasser zum Waschen bzw. Duschen. Das Badezimmer ist fast größer als das Zimmer selbst. Mit 2 geöffneten Koffern wird es platzmäßig schon schwierig. Da stört dann die liebevolle Bett-Deko, die man auch noch irgendwo verstauen muss, eher. Das passt nicht so recht zu einem 5-Sterne-Hotel. Statt einer Minibar mit Kauf-Getränken wäre ein Kühlschrank praktischer für die eigenen Getränke, das Kühlgut und die Kühlakkus. Ich würde mir für einen weiteren Aufenthalt etwas anderes suchen.

Everything about this hotel exceeds expectations. Starting with the warm welcome at reception, the staff are friendly and professional, the rooms are spacious and beautiful - including a large bathroom with rain shower and old fashioned claw tub. And the food is delicious. I would definitely stay here again. An historic gem of a hotel.

Mooi gerestaureerd complex op een uitstekende locatie. Goede parkeermogelijkheden en ruime kamers. Toch is dit geen 5 sterren hotel. De service en voorzieningen zouden veel beter kunnen. Elektrisch handdoekenrek niet uit te schakelen, beperkte menukaart in het restaurant, kleding van de wasserij werd niet terugbezorgd, weinig privacy bij de receptie (studenten hotelschool, in en uitlopen personeel)....

Next time in Graaff Reinet not The Drostdy

While the room was beautiful, very large and well-maintained, and reception was trying hard to do a good job, although not sufficient for a hotel of this reputation, the restaurant was clearly sub-standard. The table which had been reserved for us, was given to another guest, the restaurant manager offered us a complimentary drink, an offer which we accepted by asking for one glass of MCC each. Later one of the two was added to the bill, which we questioned. When we paid at reception the next day, it turned out that the value had been reduced from the tip - very unfair. To leave the light on in the room after turn down service is 20th century and not acceptable in a country with load-shedding …
