Our stay in the temple was a really special way to end our trip in Japan. We really appreciated the serenity of the location and the grounds. The interaction with the monks was lovely. This type of stay is not for everyone please have you expectations set to get the most out of this experience. Check in closes at 5pm. This is because dinner (include in half board) is served at 5.30pm. The meal consists of a traditional Japanese Buddhist meal of about 10 dishes including tofo, rice, soup,...

Staying in Eko-in is an experience not to be missed. Our room was amazing, in the annex building, which felt brand new. The night cemetery tour has been the highlight of our Japan trip and the morning prayer and fire ritual were also great. Food was amazing and plentiful although Japanese breakfast wasn't a hit for us. We bought some pastries from Family Mart to have as backup, which came in handy. Free parking is provided too. The monks were all very welcoming and spoke good English.

The 'staff' (monks) were excellent, from start to finish, and really added to the experience. They were attentive, warm, and friendly. The room had a typical ryokan layout and was comfortable. The (vegan) food was excellently presented, plentiful, and tasted good in the main. My only gripe is the beanbag style pillows which were pretty solid and tough to sleep on. As it was so warm I rolled up the duvet and used that as a pillow instead which meant I slept well. The opportunity to attend morning...

I was always knew this was going to be a true Buddhist experience, but was pleasantly surprised by the comfort and added amenities offered by Kumagai-Ji. We went for the traditional room, with tatami mats and sliding paper doors, and were blown away by the size of the room (actually two rooms side by side that we both had) and the beauty of the place and location to the zen garden. There was a table for which you kneel at, but had an under heater for your knees! The room was opposite the...

The Railway Hotel Koyasan Pilgrimage Railway

Kudoyama

This place is amazing. Large for Japan standards and quirky, with original station features and nice add ons the owner has made. Lovely thoughtful inclusions such as a torch, ear plugs (ee didnt need them, to be honest most places in Japan you can hear a trai !), umbrella, lovely bath products, great coffee, breakfast tickets, microwave. The owner has made the effort. This was a highlight of two weeks around Japan.
