Russborough House

Russborough House sits near the Blessington Lakes in County Wicklow in the Republic of Ireland. Set in parkland and built in the 18th Century in the Italian Palladian style, the mansion is believed to be the longest house in Ireland, with a frontage spanning approximately 700 feet.

Owned by the Leeson family until 1931, Russborough House was purchased by Sir Alfred and Lady Beit in 1952 and used to house their stunning art collection, including many Old Masters paintings.

Many artworks were donated to the National Gallery of Ireland in 1987, but the collection is also known for having been targeted in several robberies between 1974 and 2002, including an IRA heist in 1974. Many paintings were recovered, and a number remain on show, making Russborough House a major draw for art lovers.

Beautifully preserved, Russborough House will appeal especially to art and architecture lovers, as well as anyone keen to enjoy a slice of Irish history in beautiful surroundings.

You can take guided tours around the elegant rooms to admire their beautiful Lafranchini stucco ceilings, ornate mantelpieces and mahogany features, and to view the exceptional array of art, including works by Rubens and Guercino.

Other attractions at Russborough House include a testing garden maze, an interactive 3D exhibition showcasing the Beits’ early 20th century photographs of their world travels and tours of the parkland. A café and gift shop round things off, making it easy to spend much of the day here.

Russborough House is open daily or on weekdays for interior or grounds visits depending on the season.
