A shame that the bar didn’t have any beer on draft. The food I had was good and the room was lovely as was the hotel in general. I couldn’t find anyone in reception (or anywhere else) on the morning I checked out so I just left the key on a desk in reception as they didn’t seem to have a key drop box.

Nice stay

Room was lovely and spacious, however it didnt have a mirror or a view which was a shame as the hotels grounds are nice. The lift needs sorting, as it made me anxious everytime getting in it with its noises a slow movement. It said it could fit 7, however a sign was next to the lift saying no mors than 2 people. Stay were polite. The reception could be nicer as this is the first area people see. Breakfast was okay, it could have had more choice. Also the drive in to the hotel could just be nicer. I would stay again.

Quality place to stay

Great stay in this interesting and quality hotel. Its so well run and everyone is trying hard to make it a success. Recently changed ownership so things are a little of a work in progress but I would definitely stay again as it was so good. Food was amazing and the room was excellent, give it a try if you like interesting period properties. This place is steeped in history. Take warm clothes as its a bit chilly in places but with a jumper I was fine and its better that way than too hot. I want to go back soon, had a great time.

Beautiful building & grounds.

Evening food was pretty good but a little overpriced. Breakfast a little disappointing to be fair. Grounds & building are lovely, rooms are not perfect but better than fair. Stayed 2 nights but no cleaning so didn't have clean cups or milk for the second day. Hotel is clearly trying to improve & Rome wasn't built in a day. Deserves a try.

MEH!!

Hotel is in need of some TLC. Cleaning of ceilings, light fittings etc to get rid of cobwebs. The grounds looked like they hadn’t been tended too in about 2-3 weeks. Bar expensive but didn’t mine that. Restaurant prices very expensive for mid range food. Comfy bed massive rooms decent shower. But unfortunately left disappointed with the overall visit.

Overnight stay.

Lovely building. Room cold on arrival but warmed up reasonably quickly. Shower poor with a cheap curtain which kept detaching from the rail and didn’t reach the shower tray. Lengthy wait for breakfast after ordering and was far to expensive for what it was.

Hi Breakfast I was told at 7.00, got to the room at 7.00 no-one there and service started at 7.15, and breakfast was being prepared individually and not buffet style as normal. I decided just to have tea and toast and give it a miss as the time to serve took too long

Overall a good experience

Stayed in what I think was a recently refurbished room, the hotel appeared to be going through renovation. Lovely big room. Room was very nice, bathroom looked like it had been done cheaply unfortunately but it was serviceable, the tap was not secured to vanity unit properly and the sink was cracked. The lock on the door did not work which makes me uncomfortable when travelling alone. Overall a good experience.

Great place to spend time away.

Second stay here in 3 months when passing by on business. As per last time the place was brilliant, in fact it was even better than last time. Cheapest room available was more than adequate, clean and well appointed. Hotel itself is exactly what I like, old country Mansion still with all its charm and grandeur but perfectly converted for its current purpose. Food was excellent. Plenty choice on the evening meal and extremely good quality, breakfast was likewise. Couldn’t of been happier. Staff were extremely helpful and made us welcome, we even happened to meet the owner who was there and he poured me a pint. Really nice guy, only found out he was the owner after he left. They have had the place less than a year but really appear to be improving things quickly and have big plans. I wish them every success and will definitely stay again if travelling down that way from Scotland again.

The restaurant service wasn’t great. Was told the lie was chicken several times. Ordered the bbq pulled pork burger….which it wasn’t then re ordered the pie for it to be steak! (Was actually better than if it had been chicken) was all a bit of a disaster but the lady who served me was lovely and apologetic and gave me a free pudding. Had a very hot uncomfortable nights sleep. Although there is air con I had it set to the coldest bit I don’t think it was working so a very uncomfortable and hot night. Beautiful hotel but let down in these 2 areas. I didn’t get much sleep

A superior/ inferior room - no view and no heating

Unfortunately after a long day traveling we arrived to find our room was freezing cold and the heating system not working. The staff showed me three alternative rooms and none had a working heating system. We swopped rooms to the least cold room. Whilst we had a Mansion Superior Room, the room was up three flights of stairs and under roof eaves. Whilst the room had sky lights we had no windows to look out of and enjoy any view. Sadly the cold room tainted our experience of what could have been a more wonderful experience and the poor weather meant we walk the grounds or visit the Wren chapel before moving on. Maybe we will give it a second chance when the weather is warmer.

Our Stay

The room was comfortable if not a bit basic for a suite and lacking a few fine details. There little to no natural light in the room due to its location in the hotel. We were told the lift was not working but it clearly was as we could hear it throughout our stay. Bottle water was not replenished for the second night. The restaurant had little atmosphere despite the open fire. It was cold and other guests still wore coats. The menu was limited, the wine list also…. Wine prices were increased by crossing our and hand writing in pen. The service in the restaurant by one member of staff was excellent. She was informative and knowledgeable especially about the wines and service. Food was well presented and of a good standard. The setting could be stunning but needs renovating to bring the hotel to its former glory keeping the original features like they have so far. There is no spa, despite being advertised as a hotel and spa.

Online, the property looks fantastic. As you drive towards the hotel the outside is stunning, but as you get inside, you can see it’s in desperate need of repair. I arrived Friday evening, and when I went to check-in, I was given my key and went to my room. The AC wasn’t working, and after trying to fix it I called reception and asked for someone to come and look at it, as it was truly too hot with no window available to open. An hour later, no one had come after being told “5 minutes”. I went to reception to speak to the manager, who turned up 10 minutes later and promised to come look at the issue. After 20 minutes waiting, i was given a new room instead. It was clean, toiletries and tea/coffee facilities, so I cannot complain. The building itself and the grounds are just so run down and in desperate need of repair and upkeep. I went for a walk and found a pile of fire extinguishers, an abandoned gazebo and long-forgotten tennis courts. I didn’t eat at the hotel, and glad I hadn’t. The prices were quite high, the food that I did see didn’t look particularly appetising, and there was one vegetarian option, nothing vegan. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel until it has had some upgrades; it was truly like stepping back in time, but not in the good way…

Situated in beautiful surroundings was a stunning building. However, black pudding should never be served next to scrambled egg and hash browns as it was on two mornings. We are not vegaterians but thought this could be quite offensive to people who were and the spoons could be mixed up etc. The hot bowls that the breakfast was let in were not the best and we saw people trying to hold their plate and the lid in one hand and scoop out the food in another. The rooms were beautifully decorated with some lovely settees etc but let down by cheap plastic flower arrangements. It needed some good quality pieces which I am sure will come in the next few years. Why advertise as a spa when there clearly isn't one or any signs of being refurbished. Two trees needed checking for safety as large branches had fallen off and one had tape round it to inform hazardous. Put a barrier round then. We would bring the dogs but large muddy lake at the bottom or the garden that needs some of the overgrowth and trees cutting back and perhaps a small fence round this. The ace is fantastic but could be stunning. So it has some great points, good points and not so good points but again this will just get better with the right management.

Awful service, unsecure and rough around the edges

Firstly the positives, the building exterior and gardens are lovely. The room, a Mansion Superior Double was clean and looked newly refurbished. There were so many negatives however. Firstly, apparently the card machine wasn’t working when we checked in so we had to be escorted to our room and told they’d be back with a key in 20 minutes. The new (that day) GM had to ask three times which room we were being shown to. 30 minutes later when we came downstairs to reception to see every room key was now on the reception desk apart from ours. The room whilst pretty with a lovely view had very limited storage and no extractor fan in the bathroom. The communal areas are very untidy and look as though a refurbishment was underway but perhaps abandoned some time ago. There are patches of bare plaster everywhere and mess on show throughout the downstairs. We headed out elsewhere for dinner and upon return found the lock on our door wasn’t working so when it shut you needed to tap the key again to lock the door. I was told this was not standard and a fault. This meant whilst we were out all of our belongings were left at risk. Likewise whilst we slept anyone could have walked in. We booked 8:30am for breakfast and came down on time to find a single couple already sat down and a completely empty room thereafter. What followed was awful including no organisation, no staff, long waits, incorrect order, continental breakfast items missing, and general chaos. Would never stay again

Choose another hotel

For the last 10 years i have travelled with work so a hotel stay is not new to me. It was 29º so made sure i booked a hotel with air con. Arrived and checked into my room which was in the attic, dirty with cobwebs everywhere and considerably hotter than 29º. Attempted to put on the air con which didn’t work. Called reception who advised someone was on their way to have a look. 20 minutes later i had to go and ask where they were, reception did not know. Was asked to wait so ended up going to the bar and having a wine (small house red wine is £9.95!!) The manager arrived to tell me they had an issue with the air con and to give him 10 minutes. 1 &1/2 hours later i was checked into another room on a lower floor, still with no working air con. Had to drive to Screwfix and buy an air con unit for £329 just to be able to sleep. Finally got to sleep to be woken up at 11pm by a member of staff just walking into my room then leaving straight away. By the time i got up and went to the door they were gone. Went to the toilet and immediately heard constant, relentless banging at the door. Answered the door to find two staff members looking very confused why i was in this room. Expressed my dissatisfaction bluntly and they appologised and said they were not told i had been moved. Breakfast was also a treat, it was quite impressive how bad the scrambled eggs were, rock sold dried lump of grey eggs and totally inedible, no staff around and couldnt even get a coffee. No discount was offered
