  • Joseph Winthrop Holley, born in 1874 to former slaves in Winnsboro, South Carolina, founded the institution in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute. W. E. B. Du Bois inspired Holley to return to the South after he read Du Bois's writings on the plight of Albany's blacks in The Souls of Black Folk. Holley relocated to Albany to start a school. With the help of a $2,600 gift from the Hazard family, Holley organized a board of trustees and purchased 50 acres (200,000 m2) of land for the campus, all within a year. The aim of the institution at the time was to provide elementary education and teacher training for the local Black population. It was turned over to the state of Georgia in 1917 as Georgia Normal and Agricultural College, a two-year agricultural and teacher-training institution. In 1932, the school became part of the University System of Georgia and in 1943 it was granted four-year status and renamed Albany State College. The transition to four-year status heavily increased the school's enrollment. In 1981 the college offered its first graduate program, a prelude to the school being upgraded to university status in 1996.

This hotel was rated a 3 star however needs to be rated a 2 star. The location and area was excellent. The lobby, breakfast/sitting area and hallways were neat and clean with no unpleasant odors. The room was neat and clean when you walked in, however the drawers had old food in them, the refrigerator needed to be wiped, not having adequate towels and no hair dyer. I discussed the above with the young man at the desk and he stated he would let the housekeeping supervisor know. The young man provided the towels we needed. I asked the young man about there full breakfast the hotel offers the young man stated the breakfast is more a grab and go. I expressed that the hotel web site needs to be updated, as we ended up going to IHOP. A male guest was at the end of the hallway vaporing and this hotel is a smoke free facility.

Check in was slow. Tub stained and very old bathroom. Needs renovation. Tv didn’t work. Beds weee good. Breakfast, cereal and waffle, no fruit or protein. Waffle maker didn’t work. Coffee ran out. Women at desk tried to cover desk and stock breakfast. Very cordial but overextended.

Staff were very friendly & helpful They had a pool but we didn’t swim I took advantage of their small gym area & used the treadmill. The sauna is a room off of the gym. Decent to navigate to the hotel. It is an older hotel which is fine but it needed more cleaning. Our room was cleaned but still could have used another vacuum. The walls looked like they needed a good washing and/or a repaint. The floor in the hallway has several large stained spots. Overall I would give it a 5.5/10 for cleanliness. The breakfast was good with you make waffles, yogurt, fruit cups, instant oatmeal and grits, plus cereal. Not much for condiments to put on the waffles. I would probably stay somewhere else if available

The room appeared relatively clean upon arrival, but several issues were immediately noticeable. A dirty towel from the previous guest was left in the room, and there was visible makeup on the pillowcase. No washcloths were provided, and the two towels present were simply tossed on the bathroom shelf. The tissue holder was missing, with an empty roll left behind and the actual tissue roll placed on top of the toilet. Neither the sink nor the tub stoppers were functional. The heating and air unit was difficult to use, and the wall thermostat had no power and did not work. Additionally, the cabinet door under the TV was broken.

It was pretty clean, no complaints. My biggest complaint was my uncle's room was canceled and no one seemed to know why. He had to go get another room at a different hotel from the family. Not acceptable. Very disappointing.

I did not even stay at the room. At the front desk while I was checking in, someone asked for new bed sheets because theirs had blood on it. I should have turned around then and the guy that was checking me in knew I was bothered my that comment because he looked guilty and apologetic. As soon as I got my key I went to examine my room and as soon as I entered the room it reeked of cigarette smoke. Mind you this is a non smoking room and $100 deposit was made. The room looked terrible like a motel and there was a door connected to the next persons room which I felt unsafe. I immediately got out of there and asked for my refund. I could not stay here. I ended up paying for a night and was refunded the second night and the deposit but the manager was rude and was telling me that my complaint of the room smelling like smoke wasn’t in my room but from the hall and room of other individuals that booked there. Since I had booked through Expedia she could only give me a receipt of refund for the deposit and I would have to get Expedia to call the hotel for a refund of the second night. In all it was a terrible experience and I will never book again.

The room was clean and the staff were friendly. Breakfast could be improved a bit, and our door lock had trouble recognizing the key. But a good hotel at a good location

Exterior looked great, but the room interior showed its age. One nice thing is the room door was inside the hallway. Room temperature was set to a cool 62 when it was around 45 outside. Heat work well and warmed up in about 5-10 minutes. Parking was easy.
