Disliked: Room comfort
It’s bad when they don’t trust
I booked a room in A.A. Lodge Amboseli
Amboseli, Kajiado County, Kenya, through the online hotel.com service on February 23 and paid $ 177 for 1 day through a visa card. When I arrived in A.A. Lodge Amboseli, the hotel administrator did not meet me warmly, suspecting that I really paid for the stay? How will I prove it?
When I showed the confirmation from hotels.com from my email, he stated that hotels.com had not yet transferred the money to their account, so I have to pay in cash now ... After a long, humiliating dispute, they still settled me in the lodge, but there were unpleasant memories ...
Let me start of saying that I have never written a bad review and I am not a picky traveler (typically stay in simple budget places).
This place was a complete disappointment. It's absolutely no value for money (if it was 50$ I admit I would probably rate higher). Here is why:
1. Cleanliness: The rooms were dirty: layer of dust on the tables; shower looked like not cleaned in a while and also old. There are no fans in the room.
2. Wifi: The wifi only works in the bar and reception. It's extremely slow - so slow that you rather give up then use it. On top of that, in the evening (post dinner) they on purpose switch it off in the reception and tell people it's only in the bar, so that people buy drinks...
3. Food: The food is quite bad. The breakfast is supposed to be 6-9am, we came in at 6:30 and most of the food was gone (e.g. there is no pancakes, no cups for tea or coffee).
4. Safety: We were sitting at the reception area in the evening chatting with our guide 2 evenings, and both days some of the other guests came in and complained about lost chargers from the room, and lost money from the room.
Overall it's not a value for money; there are lodges inside the park for slightly more with significantly better services. I wish we did that; and would recommend everyone else the same.
I was a little unsure about staying at AA Lodge after reading a few less-than glowing reviews online. Overall it was an ok, if overpriced, option (although there isn't a huge amount of competition in the area).
Check in was easy. The lodge is quite spread out with a lovely covered main walkway (but not covered to all guest rooms)
Room - the rooms have their own charm. Reasonable size with the necessities
Bathroom - adequate. Hot water takes several minutes to come through
Bed - mattresses are VERY firm and really need to be replaced or have mattress toppers. They are far firmer than anything you would find in a Western country and may mean a poor night's sleep
Dining room - interesting building that could be amazing with some attention to decor (it's currently a bland olive green, poorly lit building)
Meals - buffet with around six-eight options for mains and sides, plus soups and salads. Quality sub-standard for the price
Service - needs improvement. Tables rarely cleared and reset. Tablecloths not cleaned (they needed a wash). A lot of the crockery was chipped and needs replacing. Same with the cultery - fork tines bent and needs replacing
Wifi - available only in reception and reasonable for Africa
Pool - nice pool area but the pool wasn't particularly clean when we were there. Unfotunately the buildings obscure the fantastic view of Kilimanjaro (when visible) that would be a real drawcard.
I expected more for the price. Time to lift their game
The place is 3.9 km from the Amboseli gate, so about 5 minutes drive. People working there are overly nice, but apparently the owners are Chinese, which might not be very good for the local economy and work conditions. They have open buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's not spectacular but pretty decent, except the desserts were consistently bad. The room is also very beautiful, but there was no hot water for the shower, which has led to a pretty bad experience after a long game drive in the national park. We asked for a late checkout, according to our reservation it was at 10 am, but we got politely kicked out of the room at 9 am already. The Amboseli park itself has lots of things to fix, the organization seems to be very corrupt, but I'm not going into detail because it has nothing to do with the hotel, just beware of those and read the rules in advance to prepare yourself.
