Miss Junies Lodge is a place of huge historical importance in Tortuguero. Members of the family including Miss Junie herself, work hard here with great passion and knowledge for this unique area and the wildlife surrounding it.
We were lucky enough to be guided by Miss Junies son Cloid on a Kayak, a night walk and a jungle walk. We were shown a very diverse range of animals, and learned about the local plants and their properties as regards culinary and medicinal uses. The grounds and the staff were excellent and attracted lots of birds and animals in their own right.
The location of the Lodge is perfect, situated up the quiet end of town so there are no noisy establishments located nearby to disturb the peace during your stay. While the accommodation is clean,it is basic and for the duration of our stay of 3 nights, there was no hot water from the tap or the shower, and back of the sink was covered with sealant which had not been removed following a repair.
We were based on the ocean side of the lodge, which we liked, I imagine if you are not keen on the sound of the waves crashing, it is more quiet on the lake side.
If you are interested in the story of the lodge, Cloid has it all at his fingertips and there is a potted history on the back of the evening menu and some amazing photos lining the walls of the restaurant\breakfast room.
We enjoyed the simple breakfast provided and the general ambience of the Lodge during our stay.
