Royal Rio Palace Hotel

"I stayed at Rio Royal Palace Hotel for 5 nights during my trip to Rio. The price was reasonable considering I booked only a week in advance. Although check-in officially started at 2pm, after arriving early from an overnight bus from São Paulo I was offered early check-in with breakfast access at 9am for R$300 (£45). Expensive for a few extra hours, but appreciated after a long journey. Breakfast was disappointing. There was variety, but the quality was poor and identical every day. I mostly stuck to fruit and cereal, although the mango juice was good. My initial room was very dated and nowhere near the standard shown in the booking photos. WiFi was also a major issue — devices connected but there was no internet despite repeated assurances it would be fixed. I was later moved to a newer room with a better view and working WiFi after speaking with a manager. The upgraded room was much better overall, although the internet remained slow and the bathroom taps made an extremely loud noise. At checkout, I was charged for minibar water bottles I don’t believe I used, but I was rushing for a flight and couldn’t dispute it. The location is convenient, around a 5-minute walk to Copacabana Beach, although traffic noise is noticeable unless you’re on a high floor. Ratings: Location 8/10, Price 7/10, Room 4/10 (8/10 upgraded), Service 3/10, Breakfast 3/10. Overall, there are likely better hotels nearby for the same price."

"Check in is a total mess, you will never get your room early as their policy is essentially for you to only get your room at 3pm. Of course this is a pointless possibly and their staff don’t really handle it in an honest way, as they tell you the room will be yours once available, but for everyone that will be at 3pm or worse. Not sure why this is, and why they need to be rude when you ask but such is their response. It is a problem, so be prepared to be exhausted and have no room your first morning in Rio…"

"The room was clean and the reception staff had flat affect and not very friendly. The card key malfunction several times and had to come down to reception 6 times to correct it. The staff at the front desk weren’t very friendly and or very helpful."

"Listen, not the best hotel, but the breakfast is good and all the fun nightlife stuff is really close by. It’s not safely walkable so there’s that. It could definitely be cleaner omg"

"When we arrived at Othon Palace around 2:30 PM, there was a long line for check-in, but one of the staff members kindly assisted us right away and took us to her office since we were traveling with young kids. She mentioned there would be an additional $60 dollars per night for an upgraded room, but unfortunately, the room she offered was not available in the end. I was surprised when we entered room 1511 and noticed cracks on the wall beside the door. Considering how much we paid for this hotel, I expected more. The furniture and carpet also felt old and outdated. The best part of the stay was definitely the beachfront location, although we could still hear noise from people across the street as well as the waves at night. The buffet breakfast was great and offered a good variety, which we really enjoyed during our stay. The pool area was also very nice. While the pool was not heated, the water was slightly warm and still enjoyable. At checkout, my husband was mistakenly charged for the upgraded room that we never received. It was only corrected and refunded after I went back to the front desk and asked about the charges."

"My overall experience at this hotel was okay. However, I would consider it more a strong 3-star property rather than a 5-star property. During my stay, I encountered an issue involving housekeeping removing a personal belonging. I was able to provide clear evidence to support my claim. Initially, my concern was not handled impartially, as there appeared to be a tendency to side with the housekeeping staff. However, upon reviewing the evidence, the team made efforts to address the matter and offered appropriate accommodation. I would like to commend the guest relations team and the hotel supervisor, both of whom were courteous and attentive in ensuring that the remainder of my stay was as comfortable and smooth as possible. In general, the hotel was clean and maintained good security standards. However, the breakfast buffet offered limited options and did not stand out as a notable feature of the stay."
