Kitesurfing and sailboarding are among the watersports activities that benefit from the strong winds and choppy waves along these sandy beaches.
With a laid-back vibe and shimmering bay, Los Barriles epitomizes the beach culture of Baja. Plenty of watersports activities make use of the fierce winds in this picturesque destination. Go surfing or windsailing on the large waves and look for dolphins and whales.
Notice the array of colourful parachutes and kites decorating Los Barriles Beach. Try sailboarding to take advantage of the consistent breeze from November to March. You can usually rent equipment and get lessons from the instructors at most of the hotels in the area as well as the ExotiKite Kiteboarding School.
Rent an all-terrain vehicle to take out on the dirt roads crisscrossing through town. While in the centre of the town, bring your kids to the playground in the Parque la Laguna. Let them splash and giggle in the welcome fountain that consists of water jets shooting into slanted barrels in tribute to the town’s name. Framing the fountain are varied cacti and narrow palm trees.
Admire the Sagrada Familia Church’s intriguing façade, which has a wide pediment and pillars. A long, cone-shaped column rises from the top of the church, hoisting a cross. Take photos of the church, with the sea providing a scenic backdrop.
Expect dry conditions in this coastal desert, with occasional rainfall in autumn. Explore the hilly terrain surrounding the town and enjoy the tranquility of the remote beaches. A little north is Pescadero, a bay with excellent sunset views.
The resort area is just south of Buenos Aires and Buenavista on the northern side of the East Cape in Baja California. Take a plane to an airport in San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas or La Paz and rent a car to make your way here. Visit other nearby destinations such as Santiago, Cabo Pulmo and El Cardoncito.
