We had a wonderful stay. The atmosphere, food, staff, and hospitality are amazing. We loved the onsen available on site, but also managed to visit other onsen in town (you can get an onsen hopping pass from the town visitor center). Overall very tranquil and relaxing. One thing to note is that the pillows can be small and you may need to ask for larger or additional pillows. Highly recommend and would visit again.
I've been to quite a number of onsen hotels. This one have 2 things impress me:
The room is big
6 private baths with different themes! plus 2 public baths, I just feel like i was in a water park onsen version
A beautiful place to stay in beautiful surroundings. Hiroki-san took great care of us from the beginning, explaining everything and serving our meals. He was very kind, patient with my attempts at speaking Japanese, and welcoming.
The riverside room had an amazing view in the autumn. There were so many onsen to choose from, shared outdoor ones and six private ones, easily accessed. Extremely relaxing.
The food was kaiseki style - many, many dishes. Absolutely delicious dinner and breakfast.
The Kurokawa Onsen area is full of charm. We particularly enjoyed a local shop run by a man who makes pottery. He explained how they make the white glaze from a local plant.
There are more onsen that you could possibly visit, but other than Yamabiko, I highly recommend the cave onsen at Shinmeikan and the beautiful outdoor one at Ikoi Ryokan (bear in mind I’ve only seen the men’s sections).
We stayed at four onsen Ryokans during our trip and this was our favorite. The outdoor baths were wonderful. There are also 6 family indoor onsen open 24 hrs a day that do not require reservation. The room was huge with a lovely view of the river. The town is charming, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and they were very happy to have kids.
Great Ryokan. The property is beautiful and it's not far from the Kumamoto limousine bus stop (the hotel gives you rides to and from the stop anyway). Short walking distance to a bunch of restaurants and the main area of the town.
Top notch service and super clean. The outdoor onsen is incredible.
A few (minor) complaints:
-Some of the decorations are a bit tacky
-You only get one bath towel during your stay. If you want an extra one you have to pay extra. This seemed...weird given the price of this hotel.

The changing area of private bath apparently was not being cleaned frequently enough so it was wet and with hairs all over the place.
