Komomenskoye, 15km South-East of Moscow center is placed on the banks of the Moskva river and was the summer retreat of the royal family. The origins of the village date back to 1336. The Church of the Ascension was built in 1532 and was one of the first stone structures with "tent roof" architecture. The church is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1994.
Danilov Monastery dates back to the 13th century and since 1983 has been the official residence of the Russian Patriarch (the russian-orthodox equivalent of the catholic Pope)
