Experience a laid-back approach to life at this former hub of commune life, located in a lush valley surrounded by must-visit national parks.

Nimbin is a charming village that is a popular base for tourists looking to explore the many beautiful national parks nearby. But it’s not just for its proximity to gorgeous countryside and varied wildlife that Nimbin is special. Come here to experience the relaxed culture of the village itself, which has a unique local spirit built on its history of communal living.

In 1973, Nimbin was the site of the Aquarius Festival, which saw droves of young people arrive in the sleepy village. As a result, the 1970s and 1980s saw communes spring up all around the area. In the hills of Nimbin, people were free to live out their visions of alternative lifestyles. Today, the legacy of this time is still clear in the village’s relaxed and quirky character. Discover its thriving arts scene, influenced by the village’s past, at the Nimbin Artists Gallery or the Blue Knob Hall Gallery, both of which sell paintings, jewellery, clothing and other crafts created locally.

Pick up some locally grown produce at the Nimbin Farmers Market, held every week. The spirit of community is still strong here. If you arrive in spring, check if the Nimbin Show is on. This annual event showcases local agriculture and produce, and places great emphasis on sustainability.

The verdant rainforest surrounding Nimbin is protected by its UNESCO World Heritage status. See it up close by wandering the meandering trails in Nightcap National Park. Be sure to stop by Protestors Falls, a pretty natural landmark with a name that hints at the area’s countercultural past. Other scenic national parks to visit include Border Ranges National Park and Wollumbin National Park. Stay alert to signs of the marsupial species that are highly concentrated in these rich rainforests, and look for birds, frogs and snakes.

Catch one of the regular flights from Sydney to Lismore Airport and you can be close to Nimbin in just over an hour and a half. From Lismore, rent a car and drive north into the hills, to find this colourful village nestled amid beautiful scenery.
