This hotel uses a self-check-in system which is inconvenient and inflexible. Although self-check-in appears to be a way to reduce staffing, in fact, the amount of confusion generated by the system requires about the same degree of staff involvement and a great deal more effort in dealing with frustrated guests.
The system is inflexible when a guest arrives before the 3 p.m. check-in time, issuing an error message rather than asking the guest to try later or offering to store luggage until the room is available. Since the error message simply states that the guest is "outside the reservation period", staff have to come and explain the situation. In my case, this was done rather brusquely and without offers to store luggage, etc.
Another rather strange aspect of "automation" at this hotel: Perhaps it is a "bug" rather than a "feature"... The fancy rear-washing toilets so ubiquitous in Japan appear to be undergoing further "improvement". The one in my room appears to automatically guess when the user wants their rear end sprayed, apparently by sensing movement patterns on the toilet seat. More research (or repair) needed! This one several times squirted me while I was trying to dry off from a previous squirt!
