Venture into the lost city of an ancient civilisation then stroll among some of South Africa’s oldest trees at this captivating town in the far north of the country.

Musina is the most northerly town in South Africa, situated in a part of the country known as the land of the baobab. These are huge trees that can live for thousands of years. In addition to its scenic beauty and wildlife, the town is also the home of an archeological site of an ancient African civilisation.

Drive around the area to witness spectacular natural attractions. Go to the Musina Nature Reserve to see the large collection of baobab trees. They are also known as upside down trees, because their spreading branches resemble roots. Drive or hike through the site to see hundreds of specimens. While you are here, find the Sand River Gneiss, a group of large rocks that are believed to be 2.5 billion years old. During your time at the reserve look out for wildlife, which includes giraffes, zebras and antelopes.

Visit Musina Experimental Farm, which is situated on a geological marvel, an enormous 94-acre (38-hectare) rock of bulai granite known as Matakwe.

Learn about Musina’s ancient past at Mapungubwe National Park. Here, you can visit Mapungubwe Hill where archeologists discovered a Lost City. This is the former home of an African civilisation, founded in the 11th century. Stop by the interpretation centre to see the golden rhino that was excavated from this site.

Take part in other activities in the park. Embark on a sunset or nighttime game drive and take a tree-top canopy walk in the forest. Nature lovers might want to photograph some of the park’s striking looking trees, including baobabs, fig trees and acacias.

Musina is situated in the northeast of South Africa, right by the border with Zimbabwe. The nearest major airport is Polokwane International Airport, 125 miles (200 kilometres) to the south.

Enjoy Musina’s spectacular scenery, natural wonders, wildlife and fascinating history at any time of year. The area is hot and dry, although the winter nights are cool.
