Keelung City Centre Travel Guide

Keelung

A busy urban street with various commercial signs, including a gym and a jewelry store.
A market stall with various vegetables, tofu, and preserved foods.
An ornate corridor with intricate carvings and golden inscriptions.
A variety of roasted meats, including chickens and sausages, displayed on a metal rack.
A traditional Chinese temple interior with ornate decorations, red pillars, and hanging lanterns.

Full of enormous statues and a diverse night market, this traditional park is one of the highlights of this scenic harbour district.

Imposing temples and historic buildings are dotted around the Keelung City Centre, with its lively night markets providing insights into the local culture. Much of the zone overlooks the port and the East China Sea in the northern part of Taiwan. Enjoy stunning views of the water from the Maritime Plaza.

Relax with drinks and snacks in one of the cafés surrounding the harbour. Here, you’ll also find the YM Oceanic Culture and Art Museum, which has a range of maritime and art exhibits. Check out the intriguing architecture of the adjacent Harbour Building, which dates back to Japanese occupation. As evening begins, make your way west to the Huzishan Keelung Viewpoint and watch the city glow with light.

Try the eclectic range of local culinary delights at the Miaokou Night Market. Rows of traditional lanterns line the sides of the open-air market, whose specialties include oyster omelets, dumplings and seafood. Visit the Dianji Temple at the heart of the market and admire the gold-leaf décor and hanging lanterns. Other places of worship in the city centre include the Qingan Temple and the Daiming Temple.

Drop down a narrow staircase on the eastern side of the market to reach the ruins of the Khóo Tsú-song Old Mansion that dates back to 1931. From the top of the house, enjoy views of the Keelung cityscape. A little north is Zhongzheng Park, filled with large, colourful statues. Marvel at the sheer size of the Statue of Guanyin.

Keelung City Centre is along the harbour in the centre of Keelung, in northern Taiwan. From the centre of Taipei, drive northeast for 16 miles (26 kilometres) to get here in about 30 minutes. Explore the surrounding region for Yangmingshan National Park, the Jinshan District and the Ruifang District.
