In my 35+ years of staying in hotels, I have never been as disgusted as when I saw the state of the throw pillows on the bed. They must have been thrown on the floor many times and never been washed. See the attached pictures, which are not even colour-accurate because my smart phone apparently can't take the picture properly.
After going online and reading other reviews, I decided not to go downstairs to complain because it's obvious from those reviews it woulnd't make any difference. It means the hotel staff has simply given up on their guests and on any level of quality.
Why hotels keep insisting on putting throw pillows on beds is beyond me. Why would you put something that is rarely washed and often ends up on the floor on clean white linnen, where people put their face on to sleep ? There is no function at all, it is not even esthetically more appealing than a bed with clean white linnen and pillows.
Next to the disgusting state of the throw pillows, the mattress was without a doubt the firmest I've ever tried to sleep on... and failed miserably. According to my watch, I sleep for 3,5 hours in segments of 30 minutes.
I checked out after 1 of 2 nights.
I will absolutely never stay in a Clayton Hotel again.
