With its whitewashed exterior and Disneyesque turrets, Strawberry Hill House is one of the U.K.’s outstanding Georgian estates of Gothic-revival design. The 18th-century mansion was constructed by famous British architect and member of the aristocracy, Horace Walpole. Gaze up at the pinnacles, battlements and round tower that give the house its castle-like appearance.
Initially a summer retreat that permitted four visitors per day, the house soon became a base for architect Walpole’s myriad collections. As you wander through the villa, study some of the impressive works of art adorning the walls. Admire the array of ceramics that include Renaissance maiolica and Greek vases. Among the eccentricities in the collection are gloves that belonged to King James I and a lock of King Edward IV’s hair.
Walpole was motivated by the medieval tombs and other features in Gothic cathedrals. Consider how this inspired the intricate details of the windows, ceilings and fireplaces in this house, which is often used as a period setting for movies and television. It has served as a location for Mr. Selfridge and The Honourable Woman, among others.
Attend some of the fun events and activities taking place here throughout the year. These have included book clubs, artistic workshops and classes on flowers. Browse the souvenirs in the shop and sip hot drinks in Walpole’s Tea Rooms.
In summer, the house opens Sunday through Wednesday from midday to late afternoon, with a shorter schedule the rest of the year. The garden opens daily and is free to visit. Stroll past the groves, meadows and woodland of the romantic landscape, now restored to its previous glory. Join the guided garden tours on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons.
