"The hotel does have a major advantage of its location, they don’t need to make big efforts to fill the rooms. Despite that, the staff was very welcoming and professional and the property is well maintained (the best that can be done with a listed building). The food quality….. that’s another story. Definitely not up to the standards for such a hotel. More like the food from petrol stations on motorways. It was a mistake to dine there and maybe I should have searched for decent restaurants in the vicinity. Breakfast also quite poor both quantity but mainly quality."

"The Salthouse is in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea, our room with two queen beds was spacious and very comfortable the large bathroom immaculate. Food and service for dinner and breakfast excellent."

"What an outstandingly beautiful grand old manor house and grounds. The description of the hotel doesn’t do it justice. There are renos coming to the exterior but overall the room was clean and stocked with everything any guest could need. We stayed in the Margadale which was grandly spacious with a beautiful view of the front lawn and the sea. Deep tub was amazing for a soak. No restaurant on site for dinner but we made use of the bar in the evening. Cozy atmosphere, perfect for intimate conversations or a get to know you with other guests from abroad. The reception staff was so gracious and lovely. Unfortunately we had an early ferry booked and couldn’t take in the breakfast. Other guests assured us it was fantastic. Highly recommended for any trip to Islay. We will be back!"

"Great location, lovely staff and fantastic breakfast. Room was a little dated, but full of all the amenities you would expect - kettle, TV, hair dryer, ironing board etc. The bathroom was well stocked with shower gel, shampoo etc and having a bath was a welcome bonus too! Something was flapping about in the wind outside my room, which woke me up a few times. Probably from a private garden nearby that the hotel has no control of! A fresh lick of paint, maybe some new furniture and paying attention to high dusting in the room would make this place faultless!"
